Lauren North’s Story:

Just speaking to Rick had made me uncomfortable. I have never liked secrets and lies, no matter how good the reason, especially if it was just to spare hurt feelings. My guilty heart harassed my head and I knew that until I told him the truth, I would have no peace.

However, I had to put personal matters to one side and deal with the issues at hand. The first of which was Des.

I’d watched him inject his foot and shoulder with two powerful localised pain killers, then drop two anti-inflammatory pills down his neck, just for good measure.

I’d selected a type of pain relief that had a similar effect to the drugs dentist’s use, where it anesthetises the area but, unlike morphine or codeine based meds, doesn’t affect your mental capabilities. I knew the strong anti-inflammatories would give him bad guts, so I’d thrown in some antacids to help him there, too.

He winced as he pulled on his boot, laces fully open.

I offered to help. But he gave me a look that told me to mind my own.

I’d already made my thoughts clear on what Des should and shouldn’t be doing, and he’d given me short shrift. Mitch had been his usual diplomatic self. Sellers, being the new girl, sensibly remained tight-lipped.

With herculean effort, Des finally stood and stamped his injured foot firmly into his boot. Hopefully, he wouldn’t feel a thing for a few hours, after that, he would be in agony.

He gave me a ‘told you so’ look.

“Right then,” he said. “A quick re-cap. We are looking for two white males. One is mid-twenties, six-two heavy set. He’s a carrot top but cuts it to the wood, green eyes. He has a scar or cleft in his chin that is quite evident and makes him easily identifiable. When I saw him he was carrying what looked like a Berretta pump, sawn short. Guy two is older, maybe double guy one, similar height, paunchy. Balding. Blue eyes. Looks a proper handful though. He was holding Kaya when I clocked him. I didn’t see a weapon, but that doesn’t mean anything. Grace has copied a current shot of the boy on her printer. Mitch, Victoria, have a good look… Now, let’s get on our way and sort these boys, eh?”

Moments later, Des had said his goodbyes to a very tearful Grace and we piled in the Audi, the Scot in front, leg extended, Mitch at the wheel and we girls relegated to the back seat. Sellers got busy immediately, going through all the kit bags individually, making each weapon ready and safe. She worked methodically, with a professional air. From our very bad start, I began to warm to her very quickly indeed.

That said, it seemed that the moment her work head was on, all familiarity went out the window. As she handed out each bag, she referred to each of the team by surname only.

“Cogan,” she said handing Des’ bag over the seat. She glanced at me, expressionless and slid mine over.
